This year marks our 4th participation in the Charles Bruneau Cup.
The first year, we were in the middle of treatment. It was our way, as a family, to rally behind a cause that suddenly became the mission of our lives.
The second year, Zachary had just rung his bell. He was one of the hero children. We could hardly believe we had crossed the finish line… a finish line that feels impossibly far away when you’re told your one-year-old baby will have to go through two years of chemotherapy.
The third year, we finally started to breathe a little. We were filled with gratitude, aware of how fortunate we had been in our misfortune. But that year also brought heartbreak—too many little ones we had met at the Charles Bruneau Unit, families we now consider friends, were going through unimaginable tragedies. Our participation took on a new meaning: to keep speaking loudly and clearly about such an important cause. Because every child lost to pediatric cancer is unacceptable, and research must continue to save the remaining 20% of children whose cancer does not respond to first-line treatments.
And now, in this 4th year, we realize we are slowly moving away from that storm.
Zachary has started school. He skates. He’s getting ready for his first baseball season, just like his older brothers. Life goes on… and he is doing well.
Even though he never went to daycare, Zachary has never cried when we drop him off at school. Not once. He never looks back. As if, somehow, he understands how lucky he is to be there, to live a normal life as a 4-year-old boy.
He doesn’t remember the battle he went through. But it lives within him in another way—in an extraordinary resilience. And it leaves a mark on a family forever. It brings you closer, changes you, and reminds you just how fragile life is.
Now, every Saturday, when we gather at my parents’ house and the kids are running around, laughing, shouting, full of life… some might call it chaos.
We see something deeply beautiful.
Because after experiencing the heavy silence of hospital corridors—where treatments drain, weaken, and take away children’s energy—there is nothing more comforting than that joyful noise.
And truly, we couldn’t be happier to be surrounded by the vibrant, lively chaos of our three healthy children.
