Almost a year has passed since Zaiquiqui’s last chemo! Little by little, life is getting back to normal. We see you growing stronger, gaining energy, and saying no to all our instructions—because you, the "terrible two", you never had the chance to experience it, thrust too early into a grown-up fight. Soon, we’ll be enrolling you in 4-year-old kindergarten, a dream for your dad and me, to see you live a gentler life, one that reflects a little boy your age. Your friends and teacher will never meet a child as resilient as you, who writes a letter to Santa every day and leaves cookies and milk by the fireplace, hoping for his visit… even in January!
This year, we are participating in the Charles Bruneau Cup for the third time. Our first participation, while in the middle of treatment, was an opportunity for us to come together as a family to celebrate Zachary’s courage and unite our strength in his fight. Last year, during our second participation, we had just rung the bell marking the end of his treatment. We were overwhelmed with gratitude for reaching that milestone, thanks to the excellent care provided by his medical team at the Charles-Bruneau Unit at CHU de Québec. But we also felt a responsibility to continue sharing the importance of pediatric oncology research and to stay involved with the Charles-Bruneau Foundation for all those who didn’t get to ring that bell and for their families, many of whom have become friends through our shared battles. This year, what I feel most is hope—the hope of seeing Zachary grow up healthy. And I truly believe that with research, we can not only cure more children but also improve the quality of life for those who survive.
