The story of charles

“When I grow up, I will be cured!”: we owe this dream and its moving message of hope to Charles Bruneau. His dream is now shared by all children fighting to overcome this dreaded disease.

The Fondation Charles-Bruneau draws inspiration from Charles’s perseverance in its efforts to lead the fight for life for as long as it takes. The road to a cancer-free future for children was his, and now that road is ours. In his memory. And on behalf of all the children who deserve to grow up healthy.

Charles was diagnosed with leukemia in 1979. He was just four years old. For the rest of his life, he would wage a courageous battle, surrounded by his loved ones. And in spite of the pain and hardship caused by the disease, he remained a child like every other – full of life and joy. Adults and children alike were profoundly moved by the great strength and willpower shown by this exceptional child.

On March 9, 1988, Charles quietly handed the torch to us.

Through the Fondation Charles Bruneau, recognized nationwide for its pediatric hematology and oncology research, Charles continues his inspiring and meaningful journey.

Our history

The Charles-Bruneau Foundation was created in 1990 by a group of parents and friends of children with cancer. Their dream was to create a place where children with cancer could be treated right here in Quebec, and where research aimed at finding a cure for the disease could take place. Since then, four Centres et Unités Charles-Bruneau have opened across the province.

In 2018, the Fondation Charles-Bruneau inaugurated its fourth unit in Québec City: the Unité d'hémato-oncologie pédiatrique Charles-Bruneau at the CHU de Québec-Université Laval. Today, 70 to 75 new cases of pediatric cancer are diagnosed here every year, and nearly 4,000 visits are recorded for the same period. In all, more than 800 children from the Québec City region and the east of the province are currently being treated for cancer.

The Foundation believes that children with cancer have the right to receive the best care available. It is therefore committed to supporting Quebec's positioning and development in pediatric oncology.

The Coupe Charles-Bruneau

To pay tribute to Charles-Bruneau, a great fan of field hockey and the Québec Nordiques, the Fondation has organized the first edition of the Coupe Charles-Bruneau, a festive and friendly ball field hockey tournament, in 2021.

Having raised close to $3 million in 3 editions, the Coupe Charles-Bruneau has gone from strength to strength, confirming its place as one of the Fondation Charles-Bruneau's flagship events.

In 2024, the Coupe will be coming to Québec City for the very first time: an event eagerly awaited and hoped for by the residents of this pillar city for the Fondation. On Saturday, May 25, over 250 people will be playing for a childhood without cancer. A date not to be missed at ExpoCité on Place Jean-Béliveau.
